About this guide and how we check sources
The Ontario Landlord Guide is published by Ontario Landlord Kit. It's written by a small Ontario landlord for people renting out a room, a basement or a single unit who want the official rules in plain English.
How we check sources
- Official sources only for rules and numbers. Every rule, date, form name and percentage comes from ontario.ca (including Ontario e-Laws for the Residential Tenancies Act and its regulations) or tribunalsontario.ca (the Landlord and Tenant Board's forms, instructions, guides and operational updates). Each guide lists its sources at the bottom.
- We read the source, not a summary of it. We open the LTB form instructions or the law itself and match our wording to it. Where the LTB gives a worked example, such as the March 3 example in the N4 instructions, we check our dates against it.
- Every page shows when it was checked. Each guide opens with a short answer, the official link it came from and the month it was last checked. The "Last updated" date shows the last time the page changed.
- We re-check when the rules move. We watch Tribunals Ontario's operational updates and the ontario.ca rent increase page, and re-check affected pages when something changes. For example, all pages were re-checked after the September 21, 2026 LTB changes and again in October 2026.
- We say what we don't know. Where an official source doesn't define something (for example, which days count as a "business day" for courier delivery), we say so on the page and pick the cautious reading.
- Corrections. If we find an error, we fix the page and update its date. Found one? Message us on our Facebook Page.
